Petitgrain (citrus aurantium)

Empowering and nurturing, petitgrain has a toning and astringent effect, combating oiliness and lifting a tired complexion.

Petitgrain is an essential oil that is extracted from the leaves and green twigs of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium ssp. amara) via steam distillation. It is also known as petitgrain bigarade.

Petitgrain gains its name from the fact that it used to be extracted from the unripe small green fruits of the plant. These days the oil is also distilled from the leaves and sometimes the twigs and branches of the tree.

Traditionally only used in perfumery and cosmetics, recently Petitgrain has become popular in aromatherapy, and is now included in many massage oils, body scrubs and other skin care products.

Petitgrain essential oil is relaxing and refreshing, although it can be soothing, depending on which combination of essential oils it is blended with. It can help with problem skin, everyday stresses and strains and is often used to promote a restful night. It has a citrus and floral aroma.
