Lemongrass (cymbopogan flexuosus)

East-Indian lemon grass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) is one of over 50 known species in the lemongrass (Cymbopogon) genus. Freshly cut leaves can be steam distilled to produce lemongrass essential oil, which is used in perfumery and some traditional medicines. Lemongrass might help prevent the growth of some bacteria and yeast. Lemongrass also contains substances that are thought to relieve pain and swelling, reduce fever, improve levels of sugar and cholesterol in the blood, stimulate the uterus and menstrual flow, and have antioxidant properties. Dried or fresh lemongrass is commonly used to make herbal teas and other drinks. When cooking with lemongrass, you can use fresh, dried, or powdered leaves. It is popular in many Asian cuisines and adds an intriguing flavour to soups and stews.

Lemongrass’s versatility extends to skincare where it is used for its cleansing and activating qualities. It gives good tone to the skin and may be effective on open pores. It is also said to clear acne and balance oily conditions.
