Rose (rosa damascene)

Rosa damascena, more commonly known as the Damask rose, or sometimes as the rose of Castile, is a rose hybrid, derived from Rosa gallica and Rosa moschata. Recent further DNA analysis has shown that a third species, Rosa fedtschenkoana, is associated with the Damask rose.

The flowers are renowned for their fine fragrance, and are commercially harvested for rose oil (either “rose otto” or “rose absolute”) used in perfumery and to make rose water and “rose concrete”. The flower petals are also edible. They may also be used to flavour food, as a garnish, as an herbal tea, and preserved in sugar as gulkand.

Because of the low oil content in R. damascena and the lack of natural and synthetic substitutes, essential rose oil is one of the most expensive ones in the world markets.

Rosa damascene, also known as Gole Mohammadi (Flower of Prophet Mohammed, because it is believed that its nice aroma reminds them of prophet Mohammad) is one of the most important species of Rosaceae family flowers. R. damascena is an ornamental plant and beside perfuming effect, several pharmacological properties including anti-HIV, antibacterial, antioxidant, antitussive, hypnotic, anti-diabetic, and relaxant effect on tracheal chains have been reported for this plant.

This prized oil possesses harmonising aroma-therapeutic properties, promoting inner relaxation, balance and sleep. It is also one of the most beneficial and skin-friendly natural essential oils.

Rose oil is known for its healing and antiseptic properties. When rose otto oil is included in a cream or lotion, it stimulates the skin, while moisturising and hydrating, boosting all skin types and being particularly beneficial to dry, mature and sensitive skin. It helps to reduce skin redness, fight inflammations, as well as fix broken capillaries on the skin and also acts as a general skin tonic with its astringent properties.
